Formalized in 1964, the Brown University – Tougaloo College Partnership (BTP) is designed to enrich both campuses through student and faculty academic and cultural exchanges, collaborative research ventures, and administrative level engagements. The Bonner Community Fellows, an initiative of the Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University, combines students’ community engagement interests with their academic and career goals. Participants engage in a week-long trip to Tougaloo College in their sophomore year to dive deeper into the history of the Civil Rights Movement through engaging with the Tougaloo community, meeting with local activists and touring the Mississippi Delta.
Program Benefits
The Bonner Community Fellowship (BCF) is a 4-year developmental program that provides students with opportunities to advance social justice through experiential learning opportunities and critical reflection. Students in the BCF will learn about ways to consider the intersections of power and privilege in community engagement while identifying paths to address the issues that matter most. Programming for the BCF Pre-Orientation may include cohort-building activities, workshops about civic engagement and positionality, and exploring different parts of Providence. Participants engage in a week-long trip to Tougaloo College in their sophomore year to dive deeper into the history of the Civil Rights Movement through engaging with the Tougaloo community.
